The two-day, language neutral, Simultaneous Interpretation Boot Camp is a workshop ideal for candidates who wish to prepare for the Consortium exam*; for those seeking opportunities to hone their simultaneous interpretation skills and strategies; and for those pursuing continuing education credits.

Practice will be conducted in a language-neutral format. Participants will be exposed to techniques and strategies developed to improve listening skills; analysis of language and meaning; accuracy and speed in delivery. Teaching materials include English-only court transcripts of varying degrees of difficulty. These will provide ample opportunity to discuss legal terminology and best practices when confronted with unfamiliar general or specialized terms.

Activities will include:

a) pre-interpretation and interpretation warm-up exercises every day;

b) simultaneous interpreting practice with focus on listening and understanding the message as well as analyzing the traits of a good delivery;

c) simultaneous interpreting practice in varying court scenarios of differing difficulty where this mode is required and d) discussion of general, legal vocabulary and specialized terminology used in court hearings.

Participants will need:

  • A notebook or laptop with windows 7 – we will use the sound recorder in accessories, internet connection to download audio files, and Adobe Reader to download and view PDF files.
  • Head-set with a mouthpiece,
  • Flash-drive with participant’s name,
  • Note-pad and pen.

A minimum number of 10 participants required. Space limited to 20. Participants will receive an agenda and/or materials a week before the course begins. If you are looking for continuing education units or credits, please forward the agenda you will receive to your state’s court interpreter program coordinator.
